Keeping it Fresh
Recently at some talkbacks we've had after the show, audiences members have asked, "How do you guys keep it fresh 8 times a week?" Good question.
I'm going into month 7 of my run as Fabrizio and keeping it fresh is definitely something myself and the rest of the cast are working at constantly. Chris Sarandon may have put it best...
During intermission one night a few weeks ago, i was feeling pretty unhappy with my performance after the first act. I felt like our cast had gotten a bit lazy and moments weren't as deep and honest as they could be. So I was trying hard to fight that energy, but that put me in my head and started the whole beating myself up thing, etc; Since Chris went into the show a week after me, I asked him if he was experiencing anything similar and he said, "Of course. But all you can do is go out every show and play the moments."
Instead of trying to push the energy of the show to where I wanted it to flow, I needed to flow with the energy surrounding me on stage. Accept what's happening in the moment, listen with every pore of my body, and react--play the moments.
That's been my mantra for the last month of shows and it's been working well. It allows me to be excited about every moment in the show and exist in each moment as if for the first time.
If any of you study Alexander Technique, it's a similar principle to freeing up your body--you don't want to grip/force anything, rather you focus on allowing the body to do what it wants, with whatever energy it's experiencing in the moment, releasing muscle gripping to create a sense of ease in the work.
Play the moments and you'll find it frees you up and makes the work easier :)

Thanks for the helpful advice! I saw the show Wednesday afternoon, and loved it. Anyway, you told me about your site, so here I am. This really is a fantastic site to encourage aspiring artists. I can tell you're truly humbled and grateful to be where you are in your career. I especially liked your article about being famous. Already, I'm making a lot of sacrifices with my free time, but I have to if I want to be successful in this field. It's nice to know that someone as successful as you admits to those sacrifices and all the work that you've done to get where you are. Did you study one particular technique? I've learned a little bit about the Alexander Technique that your spoke of, but I've been studying Stanislavski more in school. Have you found one technique to work for you, or do you just act how you feel, and leave it up to that? Again, I really enjoyed your performance the other day, and I think you will continue to go far in your career with a incredible natural talent and strong work ethic. Thanks for being so kind and talking to me after the show.

By the way- Duke won last night!
Hi Aaron,
I just wanted to let you know that my whole high school choir (22 people) is coming to see Piazza this Sunday! We got invited to a Festival of Gold choir competition in New York, and while we are there, everyone is going to see a show. I actually am not going on the trip because I am in tech rehearsals for another show- trust me, that was a hard decision! But it's the children's coro of Carmen at the San Diego Opera! Very exciting :-)
Anyways, I rallyed for LITP because I loved it when I saw it in October, and that ended up being the one chosen! We're from San Diego, and a lot of the choir (including our choir director!) has never been to NYC or seen a Broadway show before- so make it good :-D
Thanks for listening!

I second what's already been said here, your blog entries are very inspiring. I'm a sophomore in New England and hope to pursue acting. It's something I definately want to do and it's people like you who help to inpire me and make me feel more confidant about it. Thank you.
Also, I haven't studiedm the Alexander Technique, yet, but that has been what I've done ever since I started acting at age 9. I have never had a "bad" second performance (knock on wood) in the sense that I'm trying to do what i did the night before. All I do is walk out on stage evry night and do my part within that moment. I don't think about my hoemowrk, or what I did last night, I think about the world I'm in and I let myself go into it. It's always such an adrenaline rush.
Again, thank you so much for being so inspiring.
Fantastic blog!
Kudos to you for keeping this up and being so candid. i am an actress, director and teacher for theatre as well and those truthful moments are what we all work for....
I have taken to blogging myself.... chickenricelah.blogspot.com
i was hoping I would still be able to catch your show when I fly to NYC this summer. Are you really closing on July 2?
