Democracy At Its Finest
How is it we live in the greatest country in the world and yet when it comes to election day, it's as if we're voting in a 3rd world country?!
In Manhattan today, (Manhattan, not GUAM) voting was a joke. I walked into my regional voting site, dealt with a few volunteers who couldn't spell my name correctly despite it being in front of them on a list and my license (ARRON, no AARRON, no ARRAN, no AARON!!!), and then was given simple instructions on how to use the rickety primitive voting booth. Pull lever to Right. Vote. Pull Lever to left. Unfortunately, when I tried to pull the handle to the left after voting it wouldn't budge. Then i spotted a small box under the candidates names labeled "release lever". So i checked that and the lever released. But I got worried that i had possibly erased my votes by checking that extra box. So i asked a volunteer if I had screwed up, and perhaps i needed to vote again, but she just smiled and said, "Ok, thank you bye now," as if she didn't speak English.
Anyone else have any great voting stories? I have friends who were not even ID'd after giving their address!!!

Ah, I don't get to vote for another two and a half months, alas. But where I live I've never had any problems voting, it's just a long line since we only have one machine. I hope it actually worked the way you wanted it to today, though!
Thats true.
Well, atleast not TOO much money is being put into the machines,
money that could have been used for other things or something ;]
not that Im old enough to vote anyway...
but great post!!!
yea,
i had a friend who thought that he wasn't registered, and because he didn't want to feel dumb when he walked in decided not to vote at all. I said, dude, you have to, and he said, but what if i go in there and people are like you have to do these 13 steps in order to vote and it will take you a half hour. I said. so go do it dumbass. We live in such an apathetic country, where people don't realize the importance of voting. Maybe the govt should not let us vote one year and just have the i dunno, oldest candidates win. And then people will understand what its like to live in a non-democratic state, maybe then people will savor the priviledge to vote so much more.
Aaron Lazar is the best performer on broadway.
Voting at my polling place is pretty seemless, but I resent the media hype prior to the primaries which try to tell us who "not to waste our vote on." I think it would be interesting to see who the American people would vote for without media interferance, that is if Americans took the time to research candidates on their own.
Good to see you blogging again. Send thoughts out to Emily who is auditioning for her first musical next Monday.
Best wishes,
Lori
My friend lives in Oregon where they do vote-by-mail. They send you the ballot and you have two weeks to fill it out and send it back. Much easier for everyone, I don't see why every state can't do it that way.
I went to vote on Super Tuesday. North Dakota does not require voter registration, yet they require a basic registration to vote in the causus. BUT, because the person who was registering me knew me once upon a time, I didn't need to show ID or anything. Just tell him what my hubby has been up to.
And no, I don't live in a tiny town. A decent sized city. This was just weird...
